@oebconference workshop notes and documents #instructionalDesign #learningTools

After being physically out of the learning circuit for about a year and a half, it is really nice to get active again. And what better venue to rekindle professional interests than at Online Educa Berlin.

Yesterday I lead a workshop on using an ID instrument I call the Instructional Design Variation matrix (IDVmatrix). It is an instrument to reflect on the learning architecture (including tools and approaches) that you are currently using, to see whether these tools enable you to build a more contextualized or standardized type of learning (the list organises learning tools according to 5 parameters: informal - formal, simple - complex, free - expensive, standardized to contextualized, and more aimed at individual learning - social learning). The documents of the workshop can be seen here.

The workshop started of with an activity called 'winning a workshop survival bag', where the attendees could win a bag with cookies, nuts, and of course the template and lists of the IDVmatrix.
We then proceeded to give a bit of background on the activity, and how it related to the IDVmatrix.
Afterwards focusing on learning cases, and particularly challenges that the participants of the workshop were facing.
And we ended up trying to find solutions for these cases, sharing information, connections, ideas (have a look at this engaging crowd - movie recorded during the session).
The workshop was using elements from location-based learning, networking, mobile learning, machine learning, just-in-time learning, social learning, social media, multimedia, note taking, and a bit of gamification.

It was a wonderful crowd, so everyone went away with ideas. The networking part went very well also due to the icebreaker activity at the beginning. This was the icebreaker:

Action 1
Which person of your group has the longest first name?
Write down that name in the first box below.

  • Choose two person prior to this challenge: a person who will record a short (approx. 6 seconds)
  • video with their phone and tweet it, and a person/s who will talk in that video.
  • Record a 6 second video which includes a booth at the OEB exhibition (shown in the
  • background) and during which a person gives a short reason why this particular learning solution
  • (the one represented by the booth) would be of use to that persons learning environment
  • (either personal or professional).
  • Once you have recorded the video, share it on twitter using the following hashtags: #OEB #M5
  • #teamX (with X being the number of your team, e.g. #team1) . This share is necessary to get the
  • next word of your WS survival bag challenge.
  • Once you upload the movie, you will get a response tweet on #OEB #M5 #teamX (again with the
  • number of your team).

Write down the word you received in response to your video in the second box below.

Action 3

  • Go to the room which is shown in the 360° picture in twitter (see #M5 #OEBAllTeams).
  • Find the spot where 5 pages are lined up, each of them with another language sign written on
  • them.
  • Each team has to ‘translate’ the sign assigned to their team. You can use the Google Translateapp for this (see google play, the app is free!).
Write down the translation in the third box below.

Action 4
Say the following words into the Google Home device which is located in the WS room

“OK Google 'say word box 1', say word box 2, say word box 3“

If Google answers, you will get your WS survival bag!

And although the names were not always very English, with a bit of tweaking using the IFTTT app, all the teams were able to get Google home mini to congratulate them for getting all the challenges right.

How can we be safe in an online environment? #oeb16 workshop

Workshops tend to take at least half a day to come to a result. But at OnlineEduca I had the pleasure of meeting Christian Friedrich and it is amazing what this man can inspire people to do in just 60 minutes time!

To tackle the subject of 'how can we be safe in an online environment' and let people come up with ideas they did not know they had before in such a small period of time... is amazing. Admittedly, his material would enable a flipped workshop approach. Where - as an ideal participant - you would read up on all the material before coming to the workshop, but in this case, the participants simply did not have the time. OnlineEduca was packed with sessions, and this workshop was organised at the end of day 1, meaning that most of the participants were already slightly tired.
But somehow this did not affect Christian, for he got us to come up with a short statement on how we could safeguard our own ideas and writings while sharing ideas online.

If you can get Christian in your conference, I am sure that the resulting workshop will give the attending participants ideas, let them think about privacy, security, identity and contemporary digital traces.

For this workshop, the participants need to identify with a specific target group, then think about potential online risks they might face, and how to counter these risks. So, in a way it was all about openness versus privacy & security. Some interesting links provided by Christian: the ethics of big data in higher education, an introduction to online privacy, and Lawrie Phipps with a great analysis on the effect of algorithms, and an audio recording with Audrey Waters and Kin Lane on Online Ownership.

This was the result from the team effort of Jeanine Reuteman, Luca Morini, Christian Glahn and Marit from Denmark (sorry, I did not remember the full name) and myself.

Notes from Mendeley workshop by @janeshsanzgiri

Live notes from a great workshop on basic and easy Mendeley use by my OU/PhD colleague Janesh Sanzgiri. In this workshop Janesh highlighted the most useful Mendeley functions, and how to use them in Word. He likes Mendeley as the files are stored in the Cloud, which allows you to access your account across all your devices as well as access it from internet-connected computers wherever they are.  And Mendeley is also seen as intuitive.

Overview of Mendeley use: off and online (important: use the sync button to sync all your devices).
Three main functions:
Library management (storing pdf’s)
Reference management tool
Academic networking between personal learning network

Import a file in Mendeley to Mendeley’s ‘Watch folder’ (this will automatically put the pdf’s into that folder, enabling quick structuring). The default folder for downloads can also be made the dump folder for all your pdf’s. So, each time you download a pdf, it will upload it into your Mendeley account (if you sync it).

If the document is not a pdf: add manually, manually (through ‘File’ button on main Mendeley toolbar)

Always check meta-data, so always check the meta-data.  As meta-data is the primary tool within the reference management function. Once that file is okay, it is durable for the rest of your research journey.
Important for the library management purpose: add tags that are meaningful for you.  Separate tags via comma or semi-colon. Additionally, you can use folders per theme or topic.

Mendeley does a full search of any word you might want to highlight, it goes through the full text of all pdf’s. You can do this by choosing ‘documents’ and put the search word in the search box on the right top side of Mendeley.

Annotations in the pdf’s are most of the time possible (not available in all pdf’s), but for those who do allow annotation, and add notes. Cfr memo’s.

Using Mendeley in MS Word
In Mendeley go to ‘Tools’: install MS Word plugin to really use the reference managing tool. This will make it much more automated, instead of manual labour. BUT provided all your meta-data is in place.

In MS Word, you can go to the ‘references’ tab in the main toolbar.  At the same time in Mendeley go to ‘view’ in the main toolbar of Mendeley, then choose the ‘Citation style’. You can always change your citation style in order to comply to the guidelines from the journal you are writing for.
Then click Alt + M and you  need to click on ‘refresh in word to switch between citation styles. How to do it: type the text, click Alt+M, type in the author, and choose the right pdf. That will add the author/s to the paragraph, as well as add it to the references.
Put any new author in through the author name and year, BUT you NEED to keep that basic citation in if you do not want to lose the full reference in your reference block.
The success depends on your meta-data.

Academic network purpose
The MOOC observatory (Southhampton, owned by Su White ), these academics tagged a lot of MOOC references. You can link to these networks. But if you link to those networks, you get a list of references, but not the full pdf’s. So if you want to get the full pdf, go to the network, scroll and explore the meta-data of these network references and find the full paper.
To find these groups you go to ‘groups’ button  within the Mendeley website, you can browse through disciplines, sub-disciplines…
You can also build private groups, but that is more for the premium model.

*Rationale*
Enhancing "awareness" of learners and other participants involved in learning processes by technology means augmenting formal or informal learning experiences, typically in real-time, with information on progress, presence, outcomes, workspace, and the like.
 
Supporting "reflection" means enabling learners to capture, adapt, re-evaluate, and share experience in anticipation of future situations it will prove relevant to. Reflection supported digitally is a creative act, adding sense and meaning to experiences made.

Combining support for "awareness and reflection" bears huge potential for improving the learning and training with respect to utility, self-regulation, usability, and user experience.

This 4th ARTEL workshop brings together researchers and industry from different backgrounds to discuss and advance support of awareness and reflection for learning. This year’s workshop will run under the headline ‘application in practice’, additionally emphasising feasibility and sustainability aspects in education and in the workplace.

The workshop seeks to attract both research results and work in progress in order to chart out the current state-of-the-art and to define main enablers and future challenges. Naturally, it will serve as a forum for establishing new collaborations.

The workshop will therefore include both presentations and discussions of research insights (papers), as well as a demo and prototype slam. Using presentations as catalyst for continuing post-talk debate, the workshop will conclude the day with an open discussion exchanging ideas, summing up, and defining a medium to long-term research agenda.

The main findings and highlights of the workshop will be presented back to the full EC-TEL plenary in the wrap up session (see main programme, once available).

Full papers thereby report on novel theoretical, empirical, or development work, including a significant contribution to the field. Research notes report work in progress to share early insights with the community. Demos describe novel prototypes, design studies, or tools, which can be shown and further discussed during the workshop.

All contributions will be peer reviewed by at least two members of the programme committee evaluating their originality, significance, and rigour. The papers will be published in the CEUR workshop proceedings (http://ceur-ws.org). Submissions should use the Springer LNCS template (http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0).

ARTEL14 will award the best paper and demo submitted.

Part3 #xAPI and #LRS #learningAnalytics #eln

xAPI (official name) and Tin Can are two names but covering the same thing, bit different ownership.

Ben looks at the anatomy of a statement (showing it IRL).

Learning Record Store: what it is, what it can do
Format is a triplet of data: actor – verb (English) – object (what it is you are doing: name, activity, …)
JSON is the language – light weight xml, each bit identifies

Important stuff:
 each verb used needs to be VERY WELL DEFINED, at this point in time you need to be VERY standardized. E.g. enter : this verb can cover multiple options, so definition is key to make the LRS meaningful.

Example using Curator platform: everytime I interact with the platform an xAPI data will be tracked

Also shows an example of xAPI integration in Google Chrome, which when clicked in that box of Google Chrome is immediately fed back as a statement to xAPI.

More on LRS
LRS is a potential key infrastructure and an LRS is a STANDARD
I was bemoaning social learning, e.g. MOOC learning, how much is done by the learner, yet is lost both for the learner and for the learning system.
Learners should own their learning data. Enabling a learning journey. Owning the JSON, the raw data.  This is what triggered the xAPI in Ben
Data gathering must be such that meaning can be taken out by other systems.

Learning locker
Ben shows his social learning linked to xAPI statements (GREAT!!!!)
Validation of actions is made much easier when observation is put into the equation: if someone else has seen you doing an activity and endorses it, you can believe the action actually took place.

But when Ben was looking at the first data, he saw that the data was dull in many cases
So a couple of experiments was done: one was on giving the learners some data to build upon (like a customer card, filled from the start with 3 stamps => more motivating!).
Combining all learning in the LRS: quantified self, LMS, surfing, mobile apps…
It is not difficult to come up with a LRS, but doing this is not as easy as thinking of it

Challenges of the ecosystem
  • Data carrying challenge: it must be awesomely standardized, otherwise analytic tools will not work (coding/decoding challenge)
  • But some systems you want to keep (e.g. Oracle, statistics tools)
  • Ben uses it to power Open Badges from Mozilla (great for informal mooc learning), xAPI provide an underlying layer for a badge: if you do this, this and this…. You get a badge.
  • And a key attribute of LRS is, that you MUST be able to put it in another LRS (think SCORM). So buying LRS needs to be critical.
  • Because we know so little for the moment, that a lot of the data will be unuseful due to all the changes anyway

Because of the wide variety of data, there are a lot of xAPI statements (e.g. used for training engineers: comparing starting engineer learners statements with expert engineer statements – 60.000 statements per day)

Why open source
  • LRS is a standard: difficult to differentiate from a tech perspective
  • Chance to shape a key piece of tech for our industry – xAPI needs this so people can experiment
  • OS gives us more marketing opportunities and vastly improved network
  • Personal sense of purpose
  • New revenue stream

Designing for data
85% of organisations will not be able to exploit big data for competitive advantage through 2015 (Gartner, 2013)

The personal LRS
Based on the core code of the organization LRS, allowing
  • Individual ownership of data (but more focus on quantified self on the front-end)
  • Presentations of experience
  • Customisation of future learning experiences (API)

Possible uses
  • Google circles: using data for putting information to different people
  • This might provide the flipped solicitation room, as the facts of what you know can be seen pre-interview, real action during interview.

Strategic aims
We will become the open source standard for LRS: the de-facto standard for LRS. To achieve this aim and fulfill our vision we have adopted three strategic aims
Develop an enterprise-ready LRS

Next week a new version of the LRS is rolled out for use (? huh, keep an eye out!)

On feasibility of building a research instrument to capture informal learning:
It is possible, but you need to plan enormously up front: REALLY know what you want to track, and how you call it, and how it must be put in.
The instrument must use VERY TIGHT TAG architecture, really defining the meta-tags and the way the people must do it, in order to be able to analyse it.
NO open statements, otherwise it becomes a nightmare to analyse => different ID for each statements

By using Experience API, xAPI, learning experiences can be logged anywhere, trackable beyond the way you’ve ever imagined. xAPI brings new possibilities to every traditional learning standard, including e-Portfolio and SCORM. The statements are in the form of “Actor”+”Verb”+”Object”+…. But, we don’t think the “Actor” is only a puppet in a given story. They are characters in their own stories and in peers’ stories. Learner-generated-learning is one of the most desirable learning moments, isn’t it? xAPI enables data driven design, the data can form a feedback mechanism for learning designers, but also for learners – who should be the co-designers of learning experiences. Furthermore, the autonomy of a learner DOES tell something about him.

Context: eLearning company which uses a lot of 3rd party content and has their own learning management system.
If you use an LMS, you must think about the standards
AICC => Scorm 1.2 => SCORM 2004 (before iPad, introduced sequencing and navigation… I remember that, building learning paths, phew!)

Baking Tin Cans: where are we today?
  1. Layer 1: SCORM parity
  2. Layer 2: Record any learning experience
  3. Layer 3: free the data
  4. Layer 4: Big data


Stuart shows how the Tin Can api has made it easier to keep track of personal online quests and retrievals. But it does mean the learner must add them to the learning system (e.g. copy paste a visited/useful URL, using content delivery networks

Off the shelf tools: still in development, but the apps options are feeling cool already, some examples:
Storyline (a bit painful for iPad development, but it is getting better). The apps sort out some of the challenges. Showing how to do it)
Articulate example is shown now. It needs to be looked at online (downside), and you need to upload it in the mobile option/publishing option
iSpring (Russian company based) works also nicely with Tin Can. Publishing to Tin Can is easier, as it has their own tab for it. It works similar to articulate: it starts where course was left off, you need to be online, but the tracking for non-assessments is not yet ideal.

part1 notes from #xApi workshop #LearningAnalytics

In the past I wrote posts on the xAPI (first one in 2011 launching brainstorm, an update on the project in 2012, and one where the project is getting up to speed in 2013) which is in continued development and seems promising for learner analytics, especially the mobile options. This set of notes is 1/4, the others notes from this workshop can be found here: part2/4 (some tools and link to xAPI demo site), part 3/4 (on connecting xAPI with LRS), part 4/4 (on learning design).

The project started at the centre of ADL, and you can find many resources at the Experience API (xAPI) page here. And there is a wiki with lots of working documents and status details as well.

For me, I am interested in the xAPI in combination with its mobile options for: tracking self-reported experiential learning, informal learning capture and 3rd party evaluation. Why? Because I am looking to build a research instrument which sort of combines classic 'learning logs' (i.e. diaries kept by the learner where s/he notes down what they have learned) and the qualtified self (a combination of the qualified and the quantified self which I wrote a post about here).

  • Allowing serendipitous learning to occur (so creating an open research instrument, yet based on first findings coming out of the pilot that was performed)

Reflection suggestion: what type of learning would be of interest to you taken into account the full personal, informal learning as well? What can be taken out of your community tools.

What do you need to think about when looking for meaningful data/analysis?
  • Learning strategy needs to be built to know what you want to look at
  • Self-reporting is depending on subjective meaning giving (cfr classic learning diaries that learners provide by self-reporting)
  • Validation of actions actually being undertaken by the learner participant
  • Coming to a mutual shared meaning of used self-reported vocabulary
  • Iteration of tracking due to learning which data does matter, how tin can actually works, how to automate data tracking for self-reported and informal learning.
  • Looking for higher level analysis: actively linking the data with discourse research, networked learning, social learning research, looking at the big five traits of a learner

@hjarche master class on #pkm Personal Knowledge Management

The past couple of months have pushed me deeper into the PhD universe, and that has lead me to rethink what I am doing in terms of my own knowledge management, how I am doing it, and where I can improve my actions and make my knowledge acquisition and sharing process more efficient (or simply more fun would also be more then enough!).

Knowledge management is mostly related to corporate or organizational learning, but the way I see it we are all in this together and networked/social learning is of importance to each one of us if we want to create our own Hive of Excellence. And yes, I would love to be a central part of a Hive of Excellence on online, mobile learning. 

Because I felt I was slipping on the knowledge side in favor of getting to grips with research methods, I was looking to find a way to understand why I had the feeling of getting of track, and more importantly to learn simple steps to get back on top of those innovations, insights and ideas that spark my own creativity and thinking. Just at that point a mail came in: master class given by Harold Jarche on Personal Knowledge Management. It is a sweet, short course (40 days) and for half of the money (149 $ as the master class has just been revamped and Harold wants to gather some word-of-mouth - and I guess feedback). And it is online... enough factors to get get me excited and pay the cost.

What pulled me in was the introductory movie. And although I do know the concepts, it soothed my brain to see which steps I currently under-nurtured, and even where I am currently lacking.

#PhD notes about #Grounded theory WS with Anne Adams

While writing up my findings for my pilot study, I am lucky enough to follow a workshop on grounded theory here at the Open University. This post reflects some of the points raised by the presenter Anne Adams, so live blogging from the workshop.
Starting from previous qualitative experiences of all the participants, Anne gets an idea of her audience. Anne who is very energetic and clearly so knowledgeable that she is open to questions from the floor at any moment. Anne’s approach is starting from the data.
Premise: it can start from mixed methods, as well as purely qualitative

Important for PhD justifying the methodology used.

Quantitative versus qualitative; either way reflective
With grounded theory the results come from the data of the participants, so the subjectivity of the qualitative is in dialogue with the predetermination of the quantitative.
Quantitative challenge: imposing external system of meaning for internal subjective structures, whereas grounded theory comes from the participants.
Qualitative challenge: generates working hypothesis by producing concepts from data, representing participants reality in its complex context. But here the researcher’s assumption does add to framing the data.
So research always has challenges through the instruments used. In ALL research challenges emerge. So being reflective is the answer to reach validity.

Grounded theory Background
Glaser and Strauss (1967) Glaser comes from quantitative, and Strauss from qualitative.
The theory is the end goal of their Grounded Theory approach. (Henwood and Pidgeon, 1992, p. 101): “both qualitative and quantitative approach…”

An important view when writing up the verification/argumentation: important view: looking at who will examine your research: educationalists, technologists…
Another important idea to remember is that Grounded Theory (GT) is an iteration. So the coding is not done linear, but iterative, where the linear is occurring in stages to find depth and meaning, after which the whole argumentation is thought through again.

It is a skill as a researcher that you can continually manage to combine detail to theory in a valid justification.

Quality rules (Henwood and Pidgeon, 1992)
  •  Importance of fit with the data
  • Integrated at all levels of abstraction
  • Reflexivity (always look for the why, justification)
  • Keep documentation (field notes, memo’s,  notes taking during the exploration)
  • Theoretical sampling and negative case analysis. The sampling is very central to the process, because the experiment is not designed, the reason for selecting your participants becomes more important and should be clearly mentioned in your PhD account.
  • Theoretical sensitivity (the methodological approach, you should not go in with a prior theory – in theory – this is seen by Glaser as polluting, but there are different flavours of GT. So you need to take a position on what you use, which GT you follow, Anne went in not with a framework, but being guided by some theory (Inge, wondering if this is more Charmaz?).
  • Transferability: how far can your findings be transferred beyond your group. The GT purists would say that any theory coming out can only be related to that specific group, but there is an element of transferability to different contexts. So the sample might be generalizable to other contexts. This might also be of importance to your PhD dissertation, but you must be very clear on it not to ignite more discussion than necessary.

Data in whatever form is: broken down, conceptualised, and put back together in new ways
Analysis stage – 3 levels of coding: open, axial and selective.

Open (concepts are identified, grouped into categories – more abstract concepts and hooks, properties and dimensions of the category identified. Each category might cover a specific property, and will have a dimension – and dimension range - either frequency it occurs, or scope that it has, the intensity with which it is mentioned, and the duration it refers to). A rule of thumb with open coding is to look for frequency and if it is only mentioned infrequently, than it might be fundamental (e;g. after that I never learned anything online again). The idea of saturation is the moment that you know you have gone far enough. Saturation will emerge where you no longer find fundamental new ideas.

Axial: start to move up from the categories, looking for high-level phenomena and conditions: causal conditions, contextual condition, intervening conditions.  Phenomena action/interaction strategies and consequences identified by your participants. Where phenomena are central ideas or events. Whereas conditions are events that lead to occurrence or development of a phenomenon. The context is a set of properties (location, e.g.) that pertain to the phenomenon. Intervening conditions provides a light coming from a broader structural contexts (e.g. is it the individual, the organisational, the societal … which depends on the research question you started from and which you are searching an answer to). Action/interaction strategies: devised to manage, handle, carry out, respond to a phenomenon under a specific set of perceived conditions. Consequences – outcomes or results of action/interaction.
(e.g. when I want o have (context) a personal conversation (phenomenon), I encrypt the message (strategy), I think this makes the email private (consequence). )

Selective (latter with process effects):
·         Select the core category (central phenomenon around which all the other categories are integrated) and high level story line (a descriptive narrative about the central phenomenon). The high level story line comes from your core category, so just a couple of sentences at the very most, that which goes into your abstract.
·         Related subsidiary categories by its properties (the other things are all related – in many cases by the properties – to your core category)
·         Relate categories at the dimensional level (it might be related dimensionally: some a lot, some less)
·         Iterative validation of relationships with data
·         Identify category gaps (telling what might be related, but is NOT what you are addressing with your research – patching holes provides the boundaries of your research)

At the end you – as a researcher – need to find a missing part of the puzzle
Lines between each type of coding are artificial
·         Data presented at dimensional level
·         Action/interaction and conditions present
The solution to come to these results are tools.
Very important: keep relationship coding notes in open coding/analysis without loss of detail, and code both open and axial together.

My additional question: who area non-purist GT theorists
Gilbert Grounded design flavour? (not sure about this, might have misheard it)
Focus is very variable, because GT has been adapted by many disciplines resulting in different GT flavors : so best is to look at your discipline and look at papers from that area.
Charmaz is really good for a intermediate approach that allows staring from some theoretical assumptions.

Tool remarks
Atlas TI fits perfectly with grounded theory (more than NVIVO), within CREET group of licences for Atlas TI (Inge, you must ask whether CREET has licences to offer you as a PhD student)
Using an analysis tool makes it easier to keep the codes up-to-date through the overall process, even if you are changing the code names. Atlas works better with multimedia files (easy coding). BUT the tool should never stand in the way of rigor and personal work/research, if the tool feels restrictive, it is better to use physical options that work for you post-it notes, Word…

#Plagiarism and digital #citizenship

If you have, at any time, wondered how to react when some of your content was picked up without being cited, this is a nice video to view as you are reflecting on the topic.  The presenter is the wonderful Sophia Mavridi talking about digital plagiarism versus digital citizenship, a war of words. It is a wonderful overview of thoughts, cultural concepts on plagiarism, factual student realities, self expression and identity, privacy, self mediation,  and ... content repetition.

The content is of interest, but at the same time it is also interesting as it is a workshop recording. So in a way, you can enter the actions of this workshop after the actual fact. Though some editing might have cut out the group discussion and enable optimal use of time for us the viewers. But still, fun idea.

The recording makes you reflect on plagiarism, but there are various factors linked to plagiarism: human cultural (copying an author can be seen as an honor in some regions), academic mark (plagiarism is seen as a negative practice), cultural acceptable practice (copying narratives for plays, songs - covers, ... goes back to Roman times and is accepted). With new plagiarism tools (name is indicative for our perception of copying other people's work), detection is increasing. On the other end, there are still opportunities for plagiarism to be un-detected (translating from other languages is one, or rewriting...), and there is the conscious or accidental plagiarism. Sophia also remarks that sometimes grades are more important than learning, making plagiarism more attractive to get good grades (students doubting themselves, lack of time, or simply not knowing how to write something). Digital citizenship is put forward as a solution.

So what to do with this idea? Maybe it needs to be redefined, maybe personally given a place in the broader scheme of things?

In the past I saw some of my content coming up in courses or sites without being quoted, and I myself undoubtedly have sometimes used words of others while loosing the original author out of sight (endless rewriting is not ideal for me in keeping track of everything although I do try). At any occasion I am wondering on what to do. Some thoughts:

  • If I want to make a difference, surely everyone is free to use what I say for their own goals? My name is irrelevant to changing the world? In fact if any detail that I can come up with would indeed have the potential to make a positive change, than this would indeed be AWESOME already? So way should I care about my name?
  • If someone uses content I have built, surely that can only be seen as Open Educational Resources being reformatted (or not) and as such - being a propagator of open education - I must be all for it? My name - again - would not matter?

So, in the end it is my own vanity that compels me to choose my name above my idea. And if I can come up with an idea once, surely I can keep on coming up with ideas so I should not mind others running off with old ideas? Great workshop on building #widgets with ROLE app

The wonderful Ralf Klamma (@klamma) got me onto just the thing I needed for today: building my own widgets workshop! If you plan to be in Portugal or there abouts in mid July, you might want to check out a workshop on creating widgets. The ROLE SDK workshop on widgets will be given during the PLE conference in Alveiro Portugal from 11 - 13 July 2012.

Widgets are great for they can give a content overview in just a minimal space. I love to use them to build what I call course dashboards. One page overviews that cover a diversity of online tools via widgets that show the headlines or titles of what is going on in each of these learning spaces.

In the last year the ROLE project developer team has bundled a set of technologies developed within the project such as learning spaces, local and remote inter-widget communication, tracking and access to learner interaction data, recommendation, etc. into one reference implementation, which is deployed and publicly available as the ROLE Software Development Kit (SDK).

Responsive Open Learning Environments (ROLE) is a European collaborative project with 16 internationally renowned research groups from 6 EU countries and China. ROLE technology is centred around the concept of Self-regulated learning that creates responsible and thinking learners that are able to plan their learning process, search for the resources independently, learn and then reflect on their learning process and progress.  Given this task, ROLE´s main objective is to support teachers in developing the open personal learning environments for their students where they can train each of the phases mentioned.
