Session on #AI, #machineLearning and #learninganalytics #AIED #OEB18

This was a wonderful AI session, with knowledgeable speakers, which is always a pleasure. Some of the speakers showed their AI solutions, and described their process; others focused on the opportunities and challenges. Some great links as well.

Squirrel AI, the machine that regularly outperforms human teachers and redefines education by Wei Zhou
Squirrel AI is an AI to respond to the need for teachers in China. Based on knowledge diagnosis, looking for educational gaps. A bit like an intake at the beginning of a master education for adults.
Human versus machine competition for scoring education, and tailored learning content offerings. (collaborates with Stanford Uni). Also recognized by Unesco. (sidenote: it is clearly oriented at 'measurable, class and curriculum related content testing). 

 The ideas behind AI: adaptive learning is a booming market.
Knowledge graph + knowledge space theory: monitoring students real-time learning progress to evaluate student knowledge mastery and predict future learning skills. based on Bayesian network plus Bayesian inference and knowledge tracing and Item Response Theory. The system identifies the knowledge of the student based on the their intake or tests. Based on big data analysis the students get a tailored learning path. (personalised content recommendation using fuzzy logic, classification tree, and personalized based on logistic regression, graph theory, and genetic algorithm.). Adaptive learning based on Bayesian network, plus Bayesian inference, plus Bayesian knowledge tracing, plus IRT to precisely determine students current knowledge state and needs.
Nanoscale Knowledge Points: granularity is six time’s deeper.  Used in medical field.
Some experiments and results: the forth Human versus AI competition, which resulted in AI being quicker and more adapt to score tests of students.  Artificial Intelligence in Education conference (AIED18 conference link, look up video youtube.com, call for papers deadline 8 February 2019 for AIED19 here).

Artificial Intelligence and Learning: myths, limits and the real opportunities.

Deep, personalized learning, biologically enabled data modeling, four-dimensional teaching approach.
How we differ: adaptive learning adapts to the individual, only shows content when it is necessary, takes into consideration what the student already knows, follows up on what the student is having trouble with.  This reduces the time of learning, and increases motivation. Impact from adaptive learning, almost 50% reduction of learning time.
Supports conscious competence concept.
AI is 60% of the platform, but the most important part is the human being, learning engineers, the team of humans who work together makes it possible.

Tumo is a learning platform where students direct their own development. After school program, 2 hours twice a week, and thousands of students come to the centre of TUMO. Armenia and Paris, and Beirut.
14 learning targets ranging from animation, to writing, to robotics, game development…
Main education is based on self learning, workshops and learning labs.
Coaches support the students and they are in all the workshops and learning labs.
Personalisation: each students choose their learning plan, their topics, their speed. That happens through the ‘Tumo path’, which is an interface which enables a personalised learning path (cfr LMS learning paths, but personalized in terms of speed and choices of the students). After the self-paced parts, the students can go to a workshop to reach their maximum potential, to learn and know they can explore and learn. These are advanced students (12 – 18 years, free of charge).
Harnessing the power of AI: the AI solves a lot of problems, as well as provide freedom to personalise the students learning experience. A virtual assistant will be written to help the coaches to help the student guided through the system.
AI guided dog: a mascot to help the students.
The coaches, assistants… are their to learn the students to take up more responsibility.
For those learners who are not that quick, a dynamic content aspect is planned to support their learning.

Looking at the ways AI can impact education

A taxonomy of AI in education
Intelligent Tutoring System (as examples mentioned earlier in the panel talk)
Dialogue-based tutoring system (Pearson and Watson tutor example)
Exploratory Learning Environments (the biggest difference with the above, is that this is more based on diversification of solving a specific problem by the student)
Automatic writing evaluation (tools that will mark assignments for the teachers, also tools that will automatically give feedback to the students to improve their assignments).
Learning network orchestrators (tools that put people in contact with people, e.g. smart learning partner, third space learner, the system allows the student to connect with the expert).
Language learning (the system can identify languages and support conversation)
ITS+ (eg.. ALP, Alt school, Lumilo. The teacher wears google glasses, and the students activity comes as a bubble visualizing what the student is doing).

So there is a lot of stuff already out there.
We assume that personalized learning will be wonderful, but what about participative or collaborative learning

Continuous assessment (supported by AI)
AI learning companions (e.g. mobile phones supporting the learning, makes connections)
AI teaching assistants (data of students sent to teachers)

The ethics of AIED
A lot of work has been done round ethics in data. But there are also the algorithms that tweak the data outcomes, how do we prevent biases, guard against mistakes, protect against unintended consequences….
But what about education: self-fulfilling teacher wishes…
So how do we merge algorithms and big data and education?

What is the impact of AI on our children is her main research considerations. How is the interaction between children and the smart agents. And what do we have to do, to avoid biases while children are using AI agents.
At present the AI biases infiltrate our world as we know, but can we transform this towards less biases?

Ending our virtual offering will be a unique dialogue – the “Berlin Remix”. A panel discussion has been organized so that the OpenCon18 K-12 Athabasca discussants (and attendees – asked upon registration) to view in advance a 20 minute video clip. This recording was part of the Berlin OpenCon17 conference where an international panel explored the broad topic of Inclusive Education and how OER responds to diversity and inclusion needs within education.

For our panel, the discussants will address this Berlin discussion and will “remix” two questions of OER curriculum creation. Within an OER curricular resource, how can educators consider: Who is missing? and Whose knowledge is reliable?

OER holds opportunity for rethinking how resources are accessed and used by K-12 educators. Come and join the “Berlin Remix” Panel Discussion - and one, some or all of the offerings! We hope to nurture a K-12 OER teacher network – and this virtual conference marks the first step of this journey.

Note: registration is suggested but not required. The K-12 OC will be recorded and archived on the BOLT Multi-author Blog.

OpenCon17 highlights
On November 11-13, the fourth annual OpenCon meeting in Berlin, Germany was held. OpenCon 2017 included a diverse set of panels, regional workshops, project presentations, unconference sessions, and a very first OpenCon Do-a-Thon

More on the Do-a-Thon
The OpenCon Do-a-Thon was organised in November 2017 and deserves a bit of extra attention: building off the concept of a hackathon, a do-a-thon is a work-sprint where people from different skill sets work together and collaborate on different challenges and projects. For OpenCon 2017’s do-a-thon, the focus was on building projects and solutions that seek to advance Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data.

Keynote: non-native English speaking k12 students using MOOCs #MOOC #digitalskills

In January I had the pleasure of being invited to the Institute of Technology in Sligo, Ireland to share my findings on a project which involves high school students using MOOC to increase their digital skills, as well as their practical language skills. This is a project which is running until June 2016, and which spans one academic year. The students are 16 - 17 year olds, and I have been given updates on the project as it evolves. But thanks to the wonderful people at ITSligo, I can also share the keynote on this ongoing project.

In the meantime I did interviews with the students at mid-course. The students have now completed their Group MOOC (having gone through a MOOC they choose in groups of 2 or 3), and are ready to commence the MOOC of their own choice, and engage in it autonomously. The outcomes keep surprising me, as the students clearly pick-up digital skills, increase their digital literacies as they use and take in different media types, and all of this in a non-native language. A fantastic pedagogical issue of IRRODL free #research #eLearning #pedagogy

IRRODL is one of my favorite journals. It is truly international, actively working on research and location diversity, it is open and each issue offers a rich array of online learning relevant methods and cases.

When I saw the synopsis of this first 2016 issue, it got me all excited just at a glance! So, putting aside some reading time, to get through this 12 research articles (get ready for a glimpse of African, Mongolian; Philippine online education adoptions and insights) and one shared bit of field notes from a MOOC in Rural Rwanda. Oh, my this is just a treat!

@ITSligo keynote and inspiring people


About nine months ago I had the pleasure of meeting GavinClinch, who works for ITSligo in Ireland. His institute does amazing online course work, and in constantly looking for ways to improve opportunities for students who transition from secondary school to university, or from university to professional fields. Like many other countries, Ireland has multiple challenges to orient their citizens for the future, luckily they have strategically, knowledgeable people working on it, such as the teams at ITSligo. Gavin is an expert in learning with technology, and he can bring out the best in people. I also had the pleasure of meeting Brian Mulligan who has 25 years of elearning experience, ranging from web programming, mixing media, drawing up online learning roadmaps… what a great bunch of people to exchange ideas with.

Sheila MacNeill joined us all to give the afternoon keynote, focusing on the blended learning journey she helps to roll out at GCU. She shared multiple tools, tips and struggles, which is always useful if you are in the same field (I twittered some of the tools here). As Sheila is a very generous scientist with a clear believe in transparent knowledge, we had many great talks on a variety of EdTech topics during breaks. Including a potential funding opportunity. Informal learning at these venues is such an enrichment. Mary Loftus also joined the seminar, which was a delight as I had never met her in real life (I had not seen Sheila IRL either). And today Sheila, Gavin and I had the opportunity to visit the grave of Yeats in Sligo (picture). 

My keynote focused on the secondary project I set up together with colleagues from GUSCO Kortrijk, to get 16 – 17 year olds ready for lifelong learning based on digital literacies and skills. Although I did give parts of the talk a few times, when preparing the talk at Sligo, I realized the overlap with my PhD study. So I also added the challenges and reasons for building the project as we are. And especially why this project is shaped the way it is, for the goal we have set ourselves: inspire more students to become passionate, successful learners.

While attending the symposium, I also had the pleasure of meeting two people of my online network for the first time. And also Kieran Tobin of ITSligo and an amazing brain to pick or more accurately learn from. Kieran seems to have sailed through many professions, each time increasing his insights, knowledge and wisdom. Kieran, Brian and I talked about nano-needles used for diabetes, the challenges for building a closed circuit insulin pomp, innovations that are happening in Sligo with top companies such as Oracle, the brain versus evolution, the need for interdisciplinary people to create holistic solutions, and of course learning in general.

I had a great, inspiring time, and I am now going home with loads of new ideas. Now, all we have to do is touch base again on the EU project.

Free 86 page book on Visible Learning via Routledge #visibleLearning

From time to time Routledge offers curated books for free download. In this case the book is on Visible learning to celebrate the upcoming new book of John Hattie. This free book is called: Know Thy Impact: Visible Learning in theory and practice, and you can get it here.

In order to get a free copy of this curated book (it takes small samples of previous books by J. Hattie, plus a a part from his upcoming book), you do need to provide your name and email address to Routledge, together with a specification of what you are interested in as a field. I wonder why? Anyway, the ebook is sent immediately to the provided email address, and it opens as a pdf.

Visible Learning
The term visible learning (launched by John Hattie) is still gaining momentum and although its main focus is on classroom settings, with some adjustments you can use it across the educational board, including some online learning options. When you think about learning, being able to understand the impact of learning on the student or learner is pivotal, as it allows you (as a teacher/trainer) to adjust your learning or at least know what its results are. Visible learning is just that, making the impact of learning visible. The term is easy enough, making it happen is much more difficult as we all know. It uses evidence-based statistics, has links to learning analytics, and visualizes different teacher-student learning options.

In this 86 page book a synopsis of prior books on Visible learning is given:
a history of how the term and books about Visible Learning came about (with links to those books, it is a promotional stunt these types of freebooks, but to me worthwhile reading as they do capture some of the core ideas behind the concept).
Some guidelines on why teachers are powerful supporters for the learning process, and how they can enhance the learning process for learners
How the teacher as activator and facilitator has an impact on learning, as such teaching leads to higher levels of learning, autonomy, and self-regulation on behalf of the learner (whether student or teacher)

A nice, brief overview on visible learning, just enough to make you decide whether to search for additional information (or not).

#Teacher contest: using innovative practices in your classroom? Enter!

My wonderful PAU education colleague Maria Perifanou just sent me a wonderful contest for all you primary and secondary teachers (in EU).

The Open Education Europa portal has just launched a contest aiming at collecting and sharing innovative teaching practices taking place in Europe. Just sharing the information from the platform here.
From my end, I am going to ask my GUSCO colleagues to enter (one or three wonderful teachers working on the integrate MOOCs in secondary school classrooms to increase lifelong learning skills).

Okay, this blog might be of important for anyone searching for funding regarding EdTech skills. Juan Pelegrin seems like an honest believer in funding projects to get change done.

An overview of funding is given… but … the question is of course (in my opinion) which type of funding of projects has had which type of objective impact (objective meaning: not-self reported, but established from outside findings).

Outcome Topic 20: tech for better human learning and teaching WP 2014-2015
Input: 174 proposals for 640 million funds
Output: only 54 proposals ranked as high quality, 12 retained (as many calls were resubmissions trying to fit into other calls), 5 were put on the reserve list.
(remark: this makes it possible if you write a high quality call to get funding: make it new, authentically fitting the call…)

Outcome Topic 20: Coverage
  • Good coverage overall with wide reach of learning contexts from formal to informal (schools, universities, VET, workplace, social learning).

@ectel2015 Using MOOC and CLIL with 16 - 17 year old students instruments & set-up

Just arrived at the EC-TEL conference in Toledo, Spain. And finalised a second set of slides together with my colleague Kathy Demeulenaere (GUSCO), focusing on a project set up by GUSCO school (k12) to integrate MOOCs into CLIL lessons.

In this HybridEd workshop paper the authors will share a pilot project that combines Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) with external (i.e. not self-developed) Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) to en-hance LifeLong Learning (LLL) skills in a blended learning environment (MOOC and classroom). The target population of this project consists of upper secondary students attending those secondary school curricula that normally result in college or university entrance. These upper secondary students follow a MOOC of their own choosing. Their MOOC learning performance in terms of language use and digital skills is monitored via generic lifelong learning rubrics and teacher-student mentoring
The slides are in a beta form of course, as we will reflect upon them in the next two days. The presentation will be on Friday 18 September in session 2 of the HybridEd workshop - 5A from 17.15 - 18.30 in the La Mancha room (if I am correct?) and ... I must say I like La Mancha, any connotation with the wonderful Don Quixote is energizing.

#MOOC use in secondary school (k12) for non-native English/French speakers

The last couple of weeks I have been working on a project with a secondary school (GUSCO school in Kortrijk, Belgium). Which resulted in some first explorations, shared in a previous post when I was still looking for a sound method. By now the direction, three teachers and 42 students have launched a class (well, three classes, but one sort of class) in which they combine MOOC with CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning). This means that all participating students are non-native English/French speakers (most of them speak Dutch, some have another mother tongue due to migration history), and they explore content provided in MOOCs on a voluntary basis to train their language skills and learn more about a topic of their interest.

Status of the project: today is the second class of this first year roll-out. The class takes up 2 hours per week throughout the academic year, lesson-plan is made (with room for adjustments throughout the year), instruments are active, teachers have been exploring MOOCs (continued professional development through autonomous action).

In tomorrow's post I will highlight some of the instruments used (still translating some), but listing them here:

  • an adapted scale for measuring skills and capacities, focusing on language and learning skills;
  • a logbook kept by the students to reflect upon their present week, and providing feedback; 
  • a self-regulated learning questionnaire to monitor self-esteem and motivation as the course moves along the academic year. 

While discussing this project, potential challenges came up, some of them felt more pressing then others. Here are three of the challenges and the responses those challenges (not necessarily evidence based at this point):


1- Will the target group of 16 - 17 year old's be capable of following and interacting in a MOOC?
When looking at secondary data coming from MOOCs that have been running, and focusing on those age ranges that participated in these MOOCs, there is a clear indication that 15 - 20 year old's are participating actively. Granted, many of those might be native English speakers (or natively speaking the language of the MOOC: Spanish, Chinese, Russian...), nevertheless non-native English speakers are also interacting, they do exist and as such that group is of interest. Furthermore that age group has been participating from early on in the MOOC roll-out. Additionally, in Belgium 8 out of 10 schools use online learning tools (e.g. Bingel, a learning platform provided by an book producer, and combining methods used in the books for learner activation outside of the classroom, either for remedial purposes or diversification. This means that in primary school those young pupils are already being exposed to online interactions, which makes MOOCs a potential next step once they move into secondary school. By then some of those options need to be researched for better understanding and guidance, to enable it to be embedded in school settings.

2 - What is the risk of those students becoming demotivated, and even loose their learning self-esteem by being exposed to following or at least interacting in a MOOC that might have content that is too complex for them at this moment in their lives?
On the issue of the content of MOOCs being too difficult. Will the average student aged 16-17 be able to complete complex assignments which are incorporated in MOOCs? My guess would be: no. But that is where the teachers come in. All three teachers are experienced language teachers, and they have a knack for for finding the Zone of Proximal Development that might just leverage the knowledge of the students that is existing in their mind to the level needed to understand (a selection) of the MOOC content. This does of course reflect in the type of grading that can or cannot be done: in this project the students will be graded on daring to speak and interact, on going through some of the MOOC content, and interacting with peers in class and in the MOOC. In a way these grades will be more generic, then content-related.
But, it is fair to say that the student motivation and self-esteem must be monitored in this case (or in any type of new class). In order to see what the impact is of each MOOC-CLIL phase (a groupMOOC phase - strong support from teachers and one MOOC is chosen for classical training in MOOC actions, a EigenMOOC (ownMOOC) phase, where small groups of students choose which MOOC they want to follow, Evaluation phase: where students produce an introduction about the class for next years students). In order to monitor the effect on student learning, a questionnaire is provided to the learners. That questionnaire looks at their self-regulated learning capacities, and monitors their motivation (extrinsic, intrinsic) and their learning self-esteem (questionnaire consists of 50 questions). By monitoring motivation and self-esteem before the full course, after the groupMOOC phase, and at the end of the OwnMOOC, we hope to get a picture of the impact of the course on the actual learning process.

3 - The fact that Content and Language Integrated Learning is combined with MOOCs that are selected by the pupils, how does this relate to the Content factor mentioned in CLIL? 
It is true that CLIL by definition demands a fair focus on content, as the language is learned via content related context. Nevertheless, we think that by letting the students select which MOOC they want to follow, they will inevitably choose a type of content that is of interest to them (more motivated?). This will (we assume) make that content more relevant for their future interests/work/plans as well, and thus the uptake of the language will be more intense. The fact that they choose which content to follow also relates to a more learner-centered approach, which is applauded at this moment in educational history (and by myself personal, as learning is personal).

Ideas on methods or instruments for CLIL and MOOC learning?

Help and thoughts welcomed. While planning a small research which combines Content and Language Integrated Learning or CLIL, MOOC and lifelong learning options, I am calling out for any help that you might be able to offer in terms of suggesting methods, pointing towards useful research instruments (either as they stand or to build on) or simply helping with the project (either this one, or setting up parallel project and that we share experiences).

This call for help comes after some work has been done, so feel free to read up where I and my colleagues from the secondary school GUSCO school in Kortrijk, Belgium are at.

Challenge and brainstorm to plan research and build research instrument(s) to be used by 15 – 16 year old secondary students to measure whether or not their language and online learning skills (in terms of self-esteem and motivation) have increased by using a teacher/classroom supported step-by-step approach where the teachers gradually step back to increase the students autonomous learning skills and competencies.

This is a small, exploratory study and as such I expect to have between 10 - 15 students volunteering (with informed consent of all parties: school, parents, students) for this research.

Potential central research question:
How does the CLIL MOOC project influence the learning readiness of secondary students voluntarily engaged in online learning courses which are delivered in a non-native language.
Or in  more hypothesis kind of formulation:
The participation of students in a CLIL MOOC project increases their language and online learning skills.

The CLIL MOOC project has three potential learning pillars:
1.       Language skills: learning or enhancing communication skills in a foreign language

3.       Lifelong learning skills: learning to learn more autonomously in view of personal learning interests

There are several challenges:
  • Whether or not these three pillars can be measured amidst other learning advances (to keep out indirect influences, e.g. learning skills coming from other courses)
  • The meta-cognitive level of the students: whether any instrument can be made that uses the right language for the processes the students can identify (any instrument used must be transparent in terms of concepts and vocabulary used)
  • Keeping the surveys limited while having all these areas to monitor
  • 10 – 15 students hardly make up a representative quantitative target population, it can be enough for a study with a main focus on qualitative methods (this means combining quantitative with qualitative, where the qualitative elements clarify the potential indicators provided by the quantitative results)
  • Building on previous learn-to-learn instruments that focus on self-regulated or/and self-directed learning (this is a new combination of factors, but still any research instrument used might be linked to previous research projects)

 Existing instruments related to self-directed/regulated learning. Four options:
  1. Use the self-directed readiness test pre- and post-course to see whether this has changed over the academic year (key researcher Guglielmino, see background here http://www.lpasdlrs.com/ and nursing training example implementation here https://www.researchgate.net/publication/11788963_Development_of_self-directed_learning_readiness_scale_for_nursing_education )
  2. Use the self-regulated learning opportunities questionnaire: to see whether the students can identify learning, and how it fits their own self-esteem and motivation. The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (key researcher Pintrich, see here for overview and manual http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED338122.pdf )
  3. Use a mix of the self-directed readiness test and the self-regulated learning opportunities questionnaire (with focus of the latter on self-esteem and motivation, as these are key lifelong learning skills), add language-related indicators - at the moment this is my favorite
  4. Build a new instrument from scratch, combining both language and MOOC skills, as well as learning to learn options.


It might of course also be a mix of self-regulated and self-directed instruments, provided to the students on different moments during the academic year. The SDL test pre and post, the SRL on 3 occasions, after each term but without meddling with the exam periods.

Question: which methodology would be best?
Attention for: limited class time, not to be too intrusive.
In view of the size of the target population, and the fact that this is a new combination of fields, I am thinking of using a mixed methodology, where attention is paid to choosing methods that are not too intrusive (as this might be difficult to combine with teachers as well as students).
Option in consideration:
Action research: The basic action research procedural routine involves four stages: (1) identifying the research question(s), (2) gathering the information to answer the question(s), (3) analyzing and interpreting the information, and (4) sharing the results with the participants.
